MAGNIFYING ICONOGRAPHY

Intensive iconographic research stimulates the artist’s imagination as well as his understanding of mythology and history :
– The icons are submitted to a sophisticated digital restoration process
– To enter into a painting, a fresco, a mosaic..
– To bring to life a painting, to transform and glorify it – without betraying its original meaning : a contemporary approach to an age-old art.

Spectacular Narrative

ACHILLES AND THE TROJAN WAR
Immersive artwork – Text and video by Dominik Barbier
Musée de la Romanité, Nîmes – 2024

THE DIMENSION OF THE DRAMATIC NARRATIVE

Trained as a young man to read greek and Roman texts, introduced to writing by the great German playweight Heiner Müller, Dominik Barbier writes original texts, sometimes inspired by the ancient, in search of a poetic form designed for wall projection. His creations for museums on myth, history, art or heritage offer an immersion through spectacular narrative.

LIVE PERFORMANCE

Dynamic, multimedia, immersive…

Dominik Barbier designs innovatives scenarios – striving to attain the « complete experience »,
a dream descended from generations of artists : from the amazing performance HAMLETMACHINE (Lyon, Marseille, Amsterdam, Rome, Palerme – 2003) to THE NIGHT OF INFERNOS in which an entire museum transformed into Virgil’s Inferno (Arles – 2014). He also creates digital scenography for other artists, including : Heiner Müller, Hubert Colas (theatre), Bernard Szajner, Art Zoyd, Kasper Toeplitz (music) Jean-Marc Matos, Giovanna Velardi, Jean-Charles Gil (choreography), Christian Jaccard, Judith Bartolani (visual arts).

Archive demo of HAMLETMACHINE – Marseille 2003
Initially commissioned for the Pope’s Palace’s Cour d’honneur for the Festival of Avignon,
created in collaboration with Heiner Müller before being interrupted by his death in 1995,
the project was revitalized in 2003 in the experimental, innovative form of the « complete experience » :
it included the audience in the center as well as multiple scenes and mural projections
for a previously unheard of aesthetic experience, combining the forms of theatre,
concert performance, choreography, poetry and monumental video installations.

Animated Sculpture

THE NIGHT OF INFERNOS
Arles Museum of Antiquity 2012

ANIMATED SCULPTURE

The statue awakens, she watches us, she speaks

At the intersection of sculpture and videography, of a captivating realism, Dominik Barbier’s animated sculptures bring to life the eternal myth of the living statue. They evoke wonder and profound emotion, and they explore the millenial question on the existence of another world, and a dialogue with the ancients about the illusion of life and the living’s legacy, to the origins of the art of the portrait and of the antique sculpture. Attuned to the voices of the dead, within the dramatic art of mythology and of history.

The technology of statue mapping Fearless Life Illusion © is the only of its kind in the world with its finesse and quality of illusion.

ACHILLES AND THE TROJAN WAR
Romanité Museum, Nîmes 2024

IMMERSIVE EXHIBITION

Dominik Barbier & Anne Van den Steen have produced over 40 immersive exhibitions and permanent installations in France and Italy.

ACHILLES is a monumental immersive artwork

It offers an experience of the myth. An ambitious artistic project based on a rigorous scientific project,
a sharp, contemporary re-reading that draws on the most recent studies, a spectacular presentation of greek iconography, never before presented in this way, based on in-depth research in the world’s greatest museums, the splendour of an immersive creation and the emotion of a powerful poetic narrative, which embraces the mystery and timeless depth of the myth and brings it to life for all members of the public, to question the link with our imagination and our culture.
